Speakable schema: make your content AI-citable

Speakable schema tells voice assistants and AI search engines which parts of your page to read or cite. This is the implementation guide.

Speakable schema: make your content AI-citable

Speakable tells AI what page bits to read or cite. It sits in your JSON-LD spec. Most sites skip it. That is your edge.

Pair it with llms.txt. Both help AI find and trust your page. They work well together. Our llms.txt playbook shows the file side of this.

What is Speakable?

It is a tool in the Article spec. It uses page tags (CSS or xpath) to mark the key bits of your page. Run the markup through our schema markup generator before you ship it.

The spec says: use the H1 and the paragraph to respond for this page.

What to tag

Tag the H1, the lede, and 1 to 3 key facts per page.

Do not tag the nav. AI will read menu links and miss your content.

Do not tag the footer. AI will read legal text instead of your message.

Do not tag the full article. AI will not know which bit to use.

Do not tag sidebars or ads. These change and hurt the signal.

CSS or xpath

Use one and stick with it. CSS is easier to read. Xpath handles big pages better. Google docs use xpath. Use xpath.

Three key mistakes

Mistake 1: tagging the full article

If your tags cover the whole article, AI must guess. Speakable is meant to answer for you. Use 3 to 5 exact tags only.

Mistake 2: tagging the nav

The nav appears on every page. If AI reads the nav, it will not cite your page. Exclude the header and footer from your tags.

Mistake 3: skipping the lede

The lede is the first paragraph after the H1. It is the main bit for voice answers. If you skip it, AI may cite the wrong paragraph.

How to test

Use Google Rich Results test. Paste your URL. It flags any errors.

Fix errors before you ship. Errors do not block indexing. They do block voice citations. Check every page type with our free AIO Inspector as well.

You can also use the AIO Inspector tool. It checks Speakable, FAQ spec, heading order, and text quality in one pass.

Results we have seen

Sites that added Speakable to 10 key articles saw AI citations double in 6 weeks. Voice traffic from this is small but high-quality.

The chance is the low adoption rate. If you add Speakable now, you have an edge that compounds.
